Kittens' Day Out

I shared previously about how our local cat population recently went from two to four. Shortly after the two new kittens were born, they retreated under the apartment complex during a rain storm, and we didn't see them for several weeks.

A couple of weeks ago, they finally emerged, and we have been enjoying having new cat friends ever since. We named the slightly larger and dark-furred one, Yuuki, which means courage in Japanese. He seemed very brave on our first encounter, but he has since become a scardy cat, always running for cover when we come near. The slightly smaller and lighter cat, we named Prince, because he looks like another neighborhood cat, we previously named King, and whom we had assumed was the father. Prince acts more like a puppy than a cat and reminds us a little of our cat, Moses, who we left behind in the States.

We contacted an animal shelter in Osaka to figure out how to deal with out cat problem. They recommended a clinic in Kobe where we could cheaply get the cats fixed. They advised capturing Chibi and getting her spayed as a top priority, so there is no more reproducing. Yuuki and Prince should be neutered and blood tested, and Ark said they would put adoption profiles on their website. The woman from Ark said that people regularly call with the same problem as us except instead of four feral cats, they are sometimes feeding 50 or 60!

We'll take the cats to the vet in a couple of weeks, and maybe get the kittens adopted after that. Until then, we'll just keep enjoying having the kittens to play with!
